Overman. Ubermensch. The name says it all: this is an incarnation of a universal ideal, of the goal of human evolution, of the bright shining Apollonian archetype. More symbol than man, the comic book version’s biggest weakness is his naive farmboy idealism.
If we had his abilities we’d try to change everything to serve our personal needs. Like a terrible two year old, we’d fight the world or enslave it or even destroy it in order to save it. We’d eventually become super-ids, and we’d be monsters.
Not so for Superman.
He wants us to pull ourselves up to his moral level. He’ll help us, but not take over entirely, not try to force our evolution. The world already makes sense to him, he needn’t compel it to. He knows freedom is the American way.
Sometimes naiveté is the twin of wisdom.
